Have you ever wondered why cycleways often have steel or timber posts erected in the middle of them? Such obstructions would never be installed in a road due to the obvious problem of people running into them but they seem to be a feature of cycleways. There have been serious injuries to people on bikes who have hit bollards, and some councils have been found negligent through installing them. Staff at Newcastle City Council have recognised that many bollards serve no useful purpose and are a hazard, and as of 2011 plans are underway for bollard removal.
Here are a few examples. If you know of others we would be keen to see a photo on the Bollards & Hazards Blog.
