Newcastle Cycleways Movement is calling for the speed limit on Curzon Road, New Lambton, to be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h — making it safer for people riding to John Hunter Hospital (JHH). For people cycling to JHH from the east, there is currently no direct separated cycling route. The alternative via Jesmond Park adds approximately 3-4 km to the journey. It took some prodding but we garnered a response from Transport for NSW for our "Lock it in, Newcastle" campaign for better bike storage facilities at the Hunter region's train stations. Newcastle Cycleways Movement opposes the proposed rezoning of Link Road Forest. Newcastle's future should be built on compact, transport-oriented development, not urban sprawl. Expanding onto the urban fringe increases car dependence, congestion and long-term infrastructure costs. Growth should be directed to existing urban areas where walking, cycling and public transport are viable, while protecting valuable green spaces for future generations.
