Celebrate the opening of the Maud St crossing - today and Friday morning!

There are two events happening to celebrate the fact that the Maud Street signalised crossing is finally open:

1. City of Newcastle community event
Date and time - 3:00 to 5:30pm, 13th March
Location - Reserve behind Queen Street (along cycleway to Uni) - https://maps.app.goo.gl/er3LqZtZjqxfgF5s5
Giveaways including maps, bells, fruit and donuts.

2. The University of Newcastle community event
Date and time - 8:00 to 10:00am, 14th March

Free coffee for cyclists, maps, general advice and networking

Riding the R1 from Newcastle Civic to Adamstown on a Friday afternoon around 5:30pm = peak hour. A distance of around 6km and yet I count less than 10 cars overtook me. There are quiet streets to cycle on - lose your car brain and learn about the safe streets to use - get in touch with Newcastle Cycleways Movement.

NCM's Freshen Up the Fernleigh - Clean Up Australia Day 2025.

NCM hosted a unique Clean Up effort where we rode our bikes along the Fernleigh Track and cleaned as we went. Bikes with trailers at the front and rear had the bags to hold the rubbish while participants had small buckets to temporarily hold their gatherings.
We think it is a credit to the users of the Track, but there wasn't actually that much rubbish - around four bags for six kilometres of track.
We had a great time meeting new people and accepting well wishes from walkers and other riders.

We'll be back next year!

The Newcastle Cycleway Movement (NCM) will be cleaning up the Fernleigh Track in Newcastle. The Fernleigh Track is an 18km long reclaimed railway track that is a shared path for pedestrians, cyclists and other micro-mobility users. It is generally quite tidy, but it would still benefit from a 'Clean Up' effort.

We will perform the clean up from our bikes - with rubbish bins on bike trailers and stops along the way as we cycle and remove any rubbish we find.

We will meet at the start of the Fernleigh Track in Adamstown, at the corner of Park Avenue and Bailey Street, at 9am on Sunday 2nd March.

Exciting news! Work is in full swing on upgrading the cycleway and shared paths on Chinchen Street in Islington. The crew is kicking things off by tackling the shared paths right in front of Islington Public School on both Hubbard Street and Chinchen Street—check out the first photo! A worker shared that they’re aiming to wrap this up before school starts back at the end of January, and then they'll move on to continue the upgrades heading northwest on Chinchen.

Just a heads-up, though—the path from the corner of Clyde Street and Chinchen Street is closed off for now, as you can see in the last photo.

NCM hosted a Christmas Lights Night ride on Saturday 21st December 2024 around the cycleways and safe streets of Newcastle!

It was a fantastic night - bikes lit up, families in cargo bikes, a penny farthing, music playing, spectacular houses and people cheering as we passed them in the streets!

Let's do it again next year!!

Great Saturday morning to ride the Bathers Way.
It may look like I am riding quickly, but this is sped up 10 times normal; I overtook pedestrians slowly and did not have a single complaint or startle anyone.

The 2024 Klunker Cruise was held today taking in part of the Fernleigh Track and the Glenrock mountain bike trails. Ideally riders had to be on a pre -2000 mountain bike but the day is just about having a laugh and a crack so there were some more modern steeds in the mix.

Great day for it and a good use of the Glenrock trails without going past the limits of some of the older bikes.

The 2024 Klunker Cruise was held today taking in part of the Fernleigh Track and the Glenrock mountain bike trails. Ideally riders had to be on a pre -2000 mountain bike but the day is just about having a laugh and a crack so there were some more modern steeds in the mix.

Great day for it and a good use of the Glenrock trails without going past the limits of some of the older bikes.

Riding the regional cycling route R5 from Speers Point Park towards the city, as far as Hamilton East. The remainder of the R5 goes along Parry St and then King St as a shared lane on a busy road - we can't recommend that part of the route as it is only for confident, experienced and fast riders. Hopefully there will be a better option via Selma St and onto Hunter St when the Stage 2 separated cycleway is constructed. The route shown here is approximately 90% shared paths and the on road sections are reasonably low traffic.
